BOOKER
T. & THE MG'S AND THE LATE
ESTELLE AXTON HONORED AT GRAMMIES
(February
14, 2007)
from www.grammy.com:
At Saturday's
event, Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to influential
folk singer Joan Baez, Memphis groove-meisters Booker T. &
The MG's, prima donna par excellence Maria Callas, free jazz
innovator Ornette Coleman, classic rock shamans the Doors, jam
band founding fathers the Grateful Dead, and Western swing
pioneer Bob Wills. The Trustees Awards were presented to Estelle
Axton, the beloved "Lady A" who co-founded Stax
records;
Doris
Fredrick, daughter of Estelle Axton, spoke movingly of Axton's
pioneering color-blind work with such soulful Stax acts as Otis
Redding, Sam & Dave, and Isaac Hayes. In reference to Axton's
nurturing approach to artists, her daughter said, "She was
considered a mother by many, and she was a wonderful mother to me."
Keyboardist
Booker T. Jones, guitarist Steve Cropper, bassists Donald "Duck"
Dunn and Lewis Steinberg, and the wife of late drummer Al Jackson
were all on hand to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award for
their work as Booker T. & The MG's. Jones described the
feeling of being up on stage to receive the award as "the
best day of my life," while Dunn made a point of thanking
the absent Jackson for his musicianship and credited him as
"the backbone of the Stax sound." Steinberg revealed
that the original title to the MG's first smash hit, "Green
Onions," was actually "Funky Onions." And Cropper
took a moment to say that while none of the band members mothers
were present to appreciate the moment, he had a message for them:
"Moms, you did good."
