IN MY WILDEST DREAMS
BY WAYNE JACKSON
(June 9, 2012 )

Previously available only by mail order, ace Stax trumpettist Wayne Jackson's self biography part 1 with the help of his wife Amy, a former journalist, is now available on Amazon at:
http://www.amazon.com/In-My-Wildest-Dreams-Volume/dp/0985381019/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339260272&sr=8-1.

Wayne Jackson's book is a pleasure to read--very honest and direct, humane. Especially candid and direct about the time after the Gulf and Western takeover, which took the joy out of working at Stax, and about the change in race relationships after King's assassination. One wishes for a bit more on the music and musicians, but there are some tasty treats on personalities.
Take 1 is outstanding .. great read and Wayne’s writing really captures the mood of what was happening in what was clearly a very exciting time for music. Take 2 is to be released shortly, according to what Wayne said two weeks ago in a radio inteview. It will cover from 1969-1979 for the Memphis Horns. Looking forward to that one.

(Short revue by Bill Saunders and Chris Cowles).

A new reissue CD with some previously unissued tracks. This compilation puts the spotlight on the music emanating from the South's greatest label - Stax Records of Memphis. In the early 60s Stax defined the sound of Southern Soul through the work of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Booker T & The MGs. From 1968 onwards the label widened its reach and, although records were still cut in their own studio, the label was also using studios in other parts of the city and the e. "Nobody Wins" follows these developments through a mixture of rare gems, previously unreleased tracks and a sprinkling of classics. Of the previously unreleased numbers, the earliest is the Charmels' 'I've Done It Again' from what was probably the under-recorded vocal group's last Stax sessioen. Chuck Brooks provides us with a brilliant version of 'Hold On This Time', and we have a wonderful unreleased number by Stax songwriter Bettye Crutcher.

A COMPLETE WENDY RENE CD REISSUE
(January 19, 2012)

Issued in early february 2012, this is the first ever anthology of the mysterious Southern soul queen who cut some of the most achingly gorgeous 45s on Stax and Volt back in the day. While she’s been sampled to death by everyone fromWu Tang Clan to Alicia Keys and covered by Lykke Li, little is known about the singer’s short but brilliant career until now. Betty Davis excluded, she’s about as reclusive as they come. After deciding to retire to raise a family, Wendy agreed to do one more concert with Otis Redding and the Bar-Kays in December ‘67, but at the last minute changed her mind. As we know, that plane crashed in Lake Monona, killing everyone on board other than trumpeter Ben Cauley. After 45 years spent decidely out of the spotlight, we’re grateful to have Wendy involved in putting together this special anthology, which includes all of her singles and close to a dozen rarities. Memphis native Andria Lisle contributes stellar liner notes.

This CD is issued by US label Light In The Attic, founded by Matt Sullivan which already issued the Packy Axton compilation underneath. Other Stax or related CD's are in the can in connection with our site.

Our friends and great Stax record collectors Allen Blasco, René Wu and Scott Johnson as well as myself provided iconographic elements for the booklet.

This compilation, available both on CD and LP shows Packy (left) in front of the famous Satellite Record Shop, Stax' record store besides the studio) with Don Nix (center) and Steve Cropper (right) Just after the Satellite Record Shop, the "Capital Barber Shop" was still there before being bought by Stax for housing offices.
