AN OTIS REDDING STATUE IN MACON
(April 19th, 2001)

Otis

Great news again about Otis Redding. Newton Collier has forwarded this message from Alan Walden, former associate/producer with Otis:

Macon, GA City council voted this week to place a statue of Otis Redding in its new Gateway Park located near The Otis Redding Memorial Bridge! The first statue of a Black Man in Macon will be of the greatest soul singer who ever lived! This has been a dream of mine come true after many, many years! Earlier Memphis announced the naming of The Otis Redding Park @12 and Ho in the city where Otis recorded all of his major hits! Keep your fingers crossed, maybe the movie next! Let me thank each and everyone who has supported keeping the memory of Otis Redding moving onward year by year! I know he would be as PROUD to know
these things are still happening as I and all of my family and The Redding Family are. He took us all to "The Dock Of The Bay," he taught us about "Respect," he "Can't Turn You Lose" because he's "Been Loving You Too Long"!!!
"Amen"
Soulfully,
Alan Walden

AN OTIS REDDING PARK IN MEMPHIS

Otis

It took the city 30 years to "try a little tenderness" and finally spend money to develop a park in Redding's honor. The City Council has approved a resolution allocating $538,000 for the project.

Thanks to Newton Collier, former Otis' musician for this news.

GROUNDSHAKING STAX SHOW
(April 11th, 2001)

Stax Groundbreaking

Soulsville, USA, the Stax Museum foundation, has set up a free one only live show with the Stax music family, next Thursday, April 20th at 9 pm in Memphis TN, near the 926 E. McLemore original Stax location. More later.

RON CAPONE
(March 29th, 2001)

Ron Capone

Ron Capone has been a great Stax recording engineer, coming to Stax in 1967. He was the engineer for such great recordings as Otis' The Dock Of The Bay, as well as Sam & Dave's Soul Man LP and many others. I received the following message from Rickie Lee Reynolds, former member of Stax white group Black Oak Arkansas: "Ron Capone, who was one of the top and original engineers at Stax in the old days has had some bad health problems in the past few months and is not doing very good. There is a benefit concert being held for him in Shrevport, La. on April 22nd at James Burton's Club of Legends. Ourselves, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Steve Cropper, and a bunch of the Sun Record people, Percy Sledge and many, many more are all trying to make it... and to locate folks about it. James Burton was guitarist for Ricky Nelson and also played with Elvis! It should be a night to remember".

More details when available.
