ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE DVD
(February 10, 2004)

Starring William Bell, Jerry Butler, Isaac Hayes, Sam Moore, Wilson Pickett, Ann Peebles, Sir Mack Rice, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Mary Wilson, The Chi-Lites, This documentary examines the careers of the 1950s-1970s Stax Records and Motown soul and R&B singers who "kept on keeping on" right through (and after) the disco scene into today, through the use of interviews with and performance footage by such Motown luminaries as Isaac Hayes, the Chi-Lites, Sam Moore (of Sam and Dave), Mary Wilson (of the Supremes) and others. The focus of the film is how these performers managed to keep thriving through the 30 years of change in the music industry since the heydays of classic R&B. The Stax artists have been filmed in mid 1999 in Memphis at a show offered to Luther Ingram to help for his health expenses. The DVD special features include DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1, five bonus musical performances, commentary, outtakes and lots more.

YOU GOTTA BELIEVE IT'S SHARON TANDY

YOU GOTTA BELIEVE IT • HOLD ON • I CAN'T GET OVER IT • OUR DAY WILL COME • PERHAPS NOT FOREVER • ONE WAY STREET • HURRY HURRY CHOO CHOO • DAUGHTER OF THE SUN • TOE HOLD • LOVE IS NOT A SIMPLE AFFAIR • LOOK AND FIND • I WANNA BE YOUR BABY • THE WAY SHE LOOKS AT YOU • HURTIN' ME • FOR A LITTLE WHILE • STAY WITH ME • I'VE FOUND LOVE • MOVE A LITTLE CLOSER • GOTTA GET ENOUGH TIME • BORDER TOWN • THINGS GET BETTER • WORLD • HE'LL HURT ME • NOW THAT YOU'VE GONE • SOMEBODY SPEAKS YOUR NAME • TWO CAN MAKE IT TOGETHER

Sharon Tandy had a recording career in her native South Africa, on her return there in 1970, as she had before leaving for Europe in late 1964, but it is with the spectacular intervening period the singer spent abroad that the long overdue compilation YOU'VE GOTTA BELIEVE IT'S SHARON TANDY is concerned. It was a whirlwind five years for the shy youngster, lived fully in the eye of the Swinging London hurricane, and overseen by the Svengali-like machinations of Sharon's mentor/manager/ erstwhile husband, Frank Fenter, who brought her to the UK with the unswerving belief that Sharon had what it took to become a star. Fenter also used his enviable position as head of Atlantic to wangle Sharon an opening slot on the famed Stax-Volt UK tour in March 1967 and, more importantly, dispatch her to Memphis to sign with Stax, where she became the first European-based artist to record at the company's hallowed East McLemore Avenue studio.

This first-ever career retrospective features virtually all of her 1960s singles and seven cuts from Sharon's legendary 1966 session at Stax in Memphis, backed by Isaac Hayes and Booker T & The MGs.
