THE MAR-KEYS

THE MEMPHIS HORNS

The Mar-Keys

BIOGRAPHY

Previously named The Royal Spades, then resident backing band on most Stax / Volt records from the first Satellite days, The Mar-Keys were usualy composed, after the mid 60's, of Booker T. & The MG's, plus Isaac Hayes and the horns of Wayne Jackson (trumpet), Andrew Love (tenor sax) and Joe Arnold (baritone sax). Packy Axton, son of Estelle Axton, co-founder of Stax, set up the band at the end of the 50's from college mates. Other members were Floyd Newman (the "Ooh Last Night" man), Gene "Bowlegs" Miller, Don Nix, Gene Parker, Ben Branch, Bob Syder and many others. They were widely responsible for marshalling the Stax Sound. In the last years of Stax, they changed their name to the Memphis Horns, composed of Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love with various other horn players (see back of page). Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love still record today as The Memphis Horns.
