MEMPHIS SOUL REVUE VOL. 1
(April 28th, 2001)

RUFUS THOMAS INTRODUCTION, BREAKDOWN, FUNKY CHICKEN, BUMP MEAT, MUSTANG SALLY, SO FINE (EDDY FLOYD & MACK RICE), EDDIE FLOYD INTRODUCTION, BRING IT ON HOME TO ME, FUNN INTRODUCTION, LOVE TRAIN, BACK STABBERS, LET ME MAKE LOVE TO YOU, GEORGE PARKS INTRODUCTION, WHAT YOU DOING TO ME.

With Rufus Thomas, Sir Mack Rice, Eddie Floyd and George Parks, with the FUNN band and singers directed by Marvell Thomas and including Michael Toles.

Recorded live on Main street, Memphis, June 2nd, 1976 by Carl Wise.

Liner notes: "It was not your typical hot June day in Memphis. STAX Records had recently closed its doors and Beale Street was being disassembled and gutted. Main Street was going to get a new look as they ripped the streets apart for a new Downtown Mall. Nothing short of a miracle could get the greatest Rhythm and Blues legends of all time together for one last concert on Main Street. When you listen to Mack Rice sing "Mustang Sally" or Eddie Floyd do "I've Never Found a Girl" with Marvel Thomas leading his band Funn on keyboards, you know it doesn't get any better in Soulsville. But then Rufus Thomas struts out steppin' to the "Funky Chicken" and George Parks sings "Wake Me Up Before You Leave". People were leaving their 9 to 5's to join the party and see these STAX legends give their best and last performance on Main Street, Memphis, Tennessee. This was history in the making, now finally available for those who were there to remember the "Glory Days", and those who weren't there experience the magic for the first time. It is good to know that the musical legacy Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton created in Memphis in 1959 will live on forever."

I have just discovered this CD, issued in 1999 by IceHouse Records in Memphis. An interesting one as it was issued only 6 months after the closure of Stax and not bad at that. The singers and musicians were still in their best Stax shape and natural environnment. Funny however to hear a "Philly Sound" tune like O Jay's "Back Stabbers". A second volume seems due later on (with the same line up, playing Knock On Wood, California Girl, Double Bump, Wake Me Up Before You Leave, Masquerade, I Love Music, Dark Skin Woman, I'm Among Friends).

IceHouse Records is a blues and rock Memphis company. It's web site is at www.icehouserecords.com. Their catalog also includes a Don Nix CD (former Mar-Keys musician and Stax singer) and their products can be ordered from www.bluesonline.com.
