JOHNNY DAYE

BIOGRAPHY

A white singer, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He had previous records on Cameo-Parkway and Jomada. Johnnie was only 15 and 16 when he did most of his recordings. It was Otis Redding who brought him to Stax after seeing Johnny on stage before he, Otis, was to perform.

Johnny did the Chitlin circuit, the college frat. circuit, and performed at the Apollo several times in Bobby Bland's review. His real name is John DiBucci. Nice guy with still a great voice for ballads. Rather bitter that his career essentially ended when Otis died; never saw much money for his work in the 60's and 70's, and stopped performing in the mid-70's. Recorded Stay Baby Stay when Martin Luther King was killed in Memphis. All his tracks were recorded live at Stax, with strings and Sweet Inspirations vocals added by Booker T. Jones in NY.

(from an interview by Bill Saunders, april 2007).
