BACK TO THE OL' STAX STUDIO
 (April 6th, 2002)

Stax studio A

From Joe Pusateri, this photo from the inside of the soon rebuilt Stax studio, seen from the control room window. The studio will be identical to the original one, including even the sloping floor and many original elements. The outside will be finished in June but the works will continue inside the museum rooms, until the official opening, set to mid 2003. See also Stax Today page 6 for an outside view.

Stax Record's first permanent sign returned home Wednesday to College and McLemore, where the museum and adjacent music academy are under construction. Mud Island River Park officials acquired the sign a week before the studio was demolished in 1989. They recently agreed to exchange the 3,516-tile sign with the nonprofit Soulsville Inc. for a piece of Memphis music memorabilia yet to be determined. The sign is among more than 2,000 pieces of memorabilia acquired so far for the Stax museum, scheduled to open in the fall. The white, teal and red ceramic sign is about 6-by-5d feet and weighs about 800 pounds.

Jim Stewart installed the sign before they could afford the neon STAX lettering on top of the marquee, said Deanie Parker, Soulsville's president and executive director. It will be installed on the facade of the Stax museum, which will be a replica of the theater-turned-music studio.
